2009 Wings & Things Kids Day
Presented by
Rio Creek Aviation Foundation
On September 19, 2009 the Rio Creek Aviation Foundation held its annual Wings & Things Kid's Day. The goal of this event is to get kids interested in aviation through fun and educational activities.
The day began with the arrival of a Piper Super Cruiser back at RCA.
The kids were split into age groups again this year for their projects. Tammy & Brenda had coloring pages, wooden airplanes and airplane candy ready to go.
The older kids started with the wooden Bi-Plane Project. They had to sand, mount the bottom wing, use the struts to attach the upper wing. Then, it was time to mount the prop, wheels, horizontal & vertical stabilizers.
The day wrapped up with the building of paper Air Powered Rockets which are always a huge hit. The process starts with applying glue to one edge of a piece of paper and rolling it up around a piece of pipe or conduit. Next, paper fins are glued on and the Rocket is decorated by coloring and/or adding stickers. It is topped off with a foam nose cone and is ready to launch.
The "jump stomp" is a popular launching method. A two-liter soda bottle is attached to a length of PVC pipe. The rocket slide onto the end of the pipe. When the kids jump on the bottle, the rocket launches.
The kids (and organizers) had a great time. We hope to see you next year!!!
