Award Presentation to RCA CFI--Armond Ullmer

Award Presentation to RCA CFI--Armond Ullmer

November 24, 2001

On November 24, 2001, Armond Ullmer, Wisconsin's oldest CFI, was honored by the Wisconsin DOT for his many years of service to General Aviation.  State Representative John Dorcey flew in to present the award while many "regulars" were on hand to congratulate Armond.  Armond currently gives lessons on weekends in his Taylorcraft at Rio Creek Airport.

Armond has been flying since 1949 and was an air traffic controller at a base in Maine during World War II.  Through the years he has taught many students at airports around Wisconsin and some have even gone on to pilot B-52's and in-air refuelers for the U.S. military.

Update:  Armond turned 90 years old in September of 2009!  He retired as an instructor a few years ago but still enjoys flying and talking airplanes. A couple weeks ago, I asked him about the whole "Jay Leno incident" (Armond's picture in the Green Bay newspaper was the butt of a joke on the headlines segment a few years ago).  Armond said, "You know, that guy kind of pissed me off...he was talking but he didn't know anything about airplanes."  (9/27/09)
